Dam Sites Identification using Multi-Criteria Analysis and Spatial Weighted Overlay. The Case of Kapseret Sub-County, Kenya

Water shortage is a common phenomenon in many parts of Kenya the dry season, including Kapseret Sub-County. However, water harvesting has seldom been practised, despite its high potential to alleviate shortages season. This largely influenced by lack access dams and pans. The objective this study was identify dam sites for Sub County, Uasin Gishu Kenya. Multiple criteria analysis weighted overlay were performed on ArcGIS map suitable location dams. multiple considered site suitability land use cover (LULC), slope, proximity streams, institutions, roads, airports. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) 30 m resolution downloaded from USGS website used process stream network, contours. Landsat 8 satellite imagery taken January 2022 generate LULC data. It established that basin moderate highly zones siting, covering 74.66% area with only 25.34% being unsuitable. Further using contours identified four combined capacity 3,436,500 m3. concluded as significant portions are generally siting. recommended action be county other stakeholders develop so increase water, particularly season when there
